A teacher put a problem before students of class IV. Add 400+7 A student has done it in the following way 400+7 = 4007 Another student has done in following manner 400+7 = 1100 What prerequisite knowledge might students not have? I will ask the students to read the topic at least once as a homework.

I will ask them to underline the important points for exam.
Class discussion after every topic completed is a must.

I would like to select activity-based strategy for a particular topic. Here visual arts like project making etc.and performing arts like cinema plays significant role in understanding a particular subject. Group discussion,experiments and exploration, survey and interviews,sharing experiences,field visits and role play all are activity-based teaching-learning process.

ReplyDeleteThe ability to develop a good research topic is an important skill. We may assign the students a specific topic, but we can also make the students choose a topic of their interest. When deciding on a topic, we need to make sure the topic is manageable and that material is available easily.
ReplyDeleteKnowing how usually students react to a class session, Content base, topic sub topic base, time limit base etc, a class session will be taken with discussion, demonstration, playway, lecture, story telling or mix of some, flexibility will also be there.

ReplyDeleteEVS is a integrated interdeciplinary subject and we as a teacher need to facilitate the students rather than becoming merely a transmitters of information.We have to focus more on the teaching strategies where we can plan some challenging situations where the children can explore,enquire for the problem/situation.We have to focus on our teaching points or concept which can be converted into questions or inquiries which would be act as the basis for constructing knowledge.
ReplyDeleteIn this period of Covid-19 pandemic,as the children are restricted at home,we couldn't allow the children for field visits,surveys and interviews,role plays etc ,my teaching strategy is mainly done through minor project work at home,discussions and sharing experiences through our whatsapp group.Some assignments can be given to them for experiments and explorations.

To engage the children in a particular topic meaningfully, teacher need to plan the different learning experiences to develop required skills, and concerns for social and critical issues which are one of the prioritised objectives of EVS. The varsity of learning experiences used to facilitate learning of the surroundings help to develop essential cognitive processes attitudes and values. The learning context in the form of narratives, case studies,and media reports can be used to sensitise children about social discrimination environmental issues, and other critical concerns.
ReplyDeleteIn the particular topic project, the projects constitute an important learning mode, which can be assigned to an individual or a group of students. A teacher may identify the projects theme wise or chapter wise and students involvement in plaining and designing the projects may also be sought. For project work children May be required to work in school hours or at home as well.
Some of the examples are :-
i) Find out about the availability of water at the time of your grandparents and parents and compare them with the present situation.
ii) If there is a Lake, well or step well near your house or school, visit it and find out more about it.
There could be project on pollution of water, water availability and it's reuse or recycling. We as a teacher may divide children into groups and each group may plan and design activities on such themes. children may prepare reports of the projects in groups and present reports in the class. The assessment may be done using criteria in the form of rubrics, which can be prepared with the help of children.

I think of a broad topic that interest the students ,I select a topic is "polar bear".I might think of the following words and topics in association:ice,cubs,pollution,hunting,diet,climate change and environmental icon.

ReplyDeleteI would like to select a strategy depending on the topic I am teaching. If the topic seems too theoretical, explaining via videos and a little bit of history on it is a better strategy for making students involved in it. Whereas if a topic contains knowledge that can be practically imaged by students, drawing diagrams and sticking to the basics and applying the same for solving variety of problems with students will definitely make them both interested and excel in that topic.

ReplyDeleteI will first try to know what knowledge my students have on that topic. Then according to that I will plan the procedure because it is the students who has to learn. I will also try to explain it in a very easy and practical way . I will try to make the learning more interesting by taking pop quiz , presentation, flow charts ,etc.

ReplyDeleteThere are many factors a teacher must take into account while selecting a strategy for a particular topic. Firstly, for the purpose of teaching the teacher must bear in mind that the topic to be selected must be such that can be taught in the allotted time given. A good guideline is to choose a topic that can be taught in 3-5 lessons. In case the teacher is teaching multiple classes, then one class is to be selected to complete this project. It is important to reflect on all the issues with the cooperating teacher and select a topic to teach. The teacher should also consider some important factors like goals of the curriculum, what the learners already know, needs and characteristics of the learner, school district, state, national and subject matter standards, educational research on best practices and the availability of equipment and supplies, the season of the year or alterations in the school schedule. These are many factors that a teacher must consider taking into account when selecting a topic to be taught..

Before attempting to choose or narrow a topic we need to have a some ideas to choose from. This can be a problem if we are suffering from the "black page or scree " syndrome and have not even any initial, general ideas for writing topics.
ReplyDeleteBrainstorming : As writers, some of our best ideas occur to us when we are thinking in a very informal, uninhibited way. Though we often think of brainstorming as a way to groups to come up with ideas, it is a strategy that individual writers can make use of as well.
Freewwiting : It is a technique much like brainstorming, only the ideas generated are written done in paragraph rather than list form. When we use freewrite, we allow ourselves a set amount of time and write down any and every idea that comes to mind as if we are writing a timed essay. What is most important about Freewriting is that we write continuously, not stopping to check our spelling to find the right word , or even to think about how our ideas are fitting together.
Clustering : It is a way of visually "mapping "our ideas on paper. It is a technique which works well for people who are able to best understand relationship between ideas by seeing the way that play themselves out spatially.
Some ideas of strategies we can use in finding topics for some of the more common types of writing assessments :-
1. Essays Based on personal experience
2. Essays Responding to or interpreting Texts
3. Essays in which we take a position (argument )
4.Essays requiring research
5. Essays in which we evaluate
6.Essays in which we propose solutions to problems.

Each students have different level of understanding so i will make sure that i select a strategy thats easy to understand ,make learning fun by provding lots of example from daily life ,include easy experiements so that whatever they learn it will be durable in a long term . My strategy would be very simple. I will ask the students to redo the entire class work into homework followed by class test after few days. In this way, the students perception regarding a particular topic can be checked and rectify their doubts, if any.

We have several strategies to select a particular topic. I would like to select a topic which is simple and knowledgeable for the students to understand easily. A good understanding will help the students to write and answers the questions of the topic and explain the stories (topic) easily.

ReplyDeleteEach topic may have an appropriate strategy for all subjects. I believe the current strategy which would be beneficial for my students would be student centred learning. It relies on getting to know each student to be able to support them in developing their own questions and finding techniques and the appropriate skills to get them where they may not even know where they may be heading.

ReplyDeleteIn order to engage children meaningful I will select a stratety for a particulsr topic that is easy and better understanding by the children by selecting various projects on pollution of water,water availability and its reuse or recycling. to make children understanding better children may divided into groups and each group may plan and design activities on the themes.children may be supported to conduct survey, experimentation,go to libraries or field visits.children may prepare reports of the projects in groups and present reports in the class.the teacher may assessed the projects by using criteria in the form of rubrics,which can be prepared with the help of students.

ReplyDeleteTo become a successful teacher in EVS subject, one should adopt the following strategies : Discussion,surveysand interviews,projects,experiments and explorations,role play etc.But the strategy should be applied according to the topic content.For example:If the topic is "Sources of water" then the use of field visit strategy would be more useful because visiting the sites of well,lake,pond,tap water etc(Which are available in our neighbourhood) will get the children a joyful and first hand experiences.

ReplyDeleteI would like to select Experiments and Exploration strategy for this topic. As it encourages children to investigate, observe, create, discuss, critically think, categorize, analyse, reason out and draw conclusions. This topic deals with experimentation where children can do the activities on their own and learn from their observation. In this chapter we find activities related to 1) What would happen if the plants do not get water? 2) How long did it take for the plant to come out from the soil? 3) Did new leaves come out of the plant every day? We may facilitate children to do the activities by providing resources or suggesting how to arrange them. Also, it is important that they need to be familiarised with the purpose of doing such activities. Discussion in class will help them think about how plants need air, water and soil.
I read the chapter for myself once and make a summary of the chapter and make a sheet of answers of the exercise after the chapter.Then I ask the students to read the chapter turn wise and simultaneously make them understand the chapter.After the chapter is completed I ask about the doubts and give them the summary and the answers of the chapter.Then I give them points about that chapter from exam point of view.

In order to engage children meaningfully need to plan the different learning experiences to develop skill with every related topics such as 1.Project works, 2.discussion, 3.Experiments and Explorations, 4.Survey and Interviews,5.Classifying are essential. ReplyDeleteI would select strategies according to the need of the particular topic. For a topic one strategy is not enough. We have to choose numbers of strategies. Project is very important strategy. It promotes children to develop a sense of cooperation and give encouragement to work together. Discussion is also one of the important strategies. Without discussion project work can not be planned. Field visit is also important. I usually use this strategy in almost maximum of the EVS syllabus.

In this dilemma, I'll instruct them to present their viewpoint at the beginning where everyone could represent their own justification.Then, I'll figure out the main reason for this dilemma and try to solve the problem. I'll clear the concept of rectangle,it's area and perimeter. Also, after proper understanding by the students,I'll present them with some similar numericals. This would make their their concept more clear and thus, they'll be able to sort out any such problem if it occurs in the future.

ii) If there is a Lake, well or step well near your house or school, visit it and find out more about it.

ReplyDeleteFor Selecting a topic under EVS in Primary Classes Strategies like Life Skills/ Values, healthy habits addressed in the curriculum of EVS are taken into account. The infused approach has been followed while dealing with life skills. While transacting the curriculum, life skills should be dealt with in context and in an integrated manner with the EVS concepts by taking suitable examples I.e uses of water, Sources of Water, activities done with or without water, uses of water in Home, judicious uses of water etc.

In a group of students we teach there is varsity some may be very smart in grasping the understanding while others a bit slow. What we as teachers can do is first of all make them comfortable enough to ask as many questions as they want make them cooperative and enhance teamwork.
