    i) conservation of natural resources
    ii) ecological aspects
iii) pollution of the surrounding natural resources
    iv) controlling the pollution
    v) social issues connected to it
vi) impact of human population on the environment.

Through the teaching of EVS,the children are exposed to the real situations in their sorrounding to help them connect,be aware of,appreciate and sensitized towards the prevailing enviromental issues. We can take the example of Pollution and its impacts. We can teach the children about declining forest areas due urbanisation or human civilization and cutting of trees for the purpose and its impacts on enviroment. We can teach them about declining oxygen level and increasing level of carbondioxide which is the major causes for enviromental pollution which has direct effects on human health.

  18. Integrated EVS:
As stated by the National Curriculum Framework (2005), “Environmental studies for primary class should be a subject, which combines and circumscribes the concepts and theories from science, social science, and environment”. Environmental studies are not taught at a very primary level (classes I and II) but the concept which is important to know at that stage of life is taught through language, mathematics, and poems.

National curriculum framework (2005) suggested that in environmental studies at the primary level there should be no place for definitions, facts, and meagre information. Children should be provided with opportunities to express, learn by doing, asking questions, and experiment. Language to be used in the book should not be formal, but it should be such that children can understand it easily.

EVS books should contain chapters made out of real-life incidents, everyday challenges, and present-day issues related to petrol, fuel water, forest, protection of animals, pollution, etc. The books of EVS should provide children’s opportunities to debate, engage, and develop a sensitive understanding of these topics.

The syllabus of EVS has been divided into six themes so as to introduce every aspect of learning which is considered important for the child at the primary level.

    The six themes are:

Family and friends (including animals, plants)
    Food
    Water
    Shelter
    Travel
    Things we make and do.
Integrated EVS has a goal of comprehensive development of an individual's social, physical, and emotional perspective

In order to reduce curriculum on young learners, it has not been recommend as a separate curricular areas in class I and II , instead the issues and concerns related to it are meant to be part of language and mathematics.
EVS at the primary stage envisages exposing children to the real situation in their surroundings to help them connect, be aware of, appreciate and be sensitized towards the prevailing environmental issues. Beginning with the child's immediate surroundings (including natural, physical, social and cultural settings) related to self, home, family and school in the early grades and gradually moving on to the wider environment neighbourhood and community at large. Creating learning situations in the context of children is very crucial to learning EVS. Efforts need to be made to avoid giving direct information, definitions and discriptions and instead create situation for children to construct their own knowledge besides the textbook and explore various learning sites other than the classroom.
Explore to the real world would give opportunities to children to encounter various social issues such as those of gender bias, marginalisation, child labour, illiteracy, caste and class inequalities in rural and urban areas, challenges of the differently abled or those elderly and sick. It is envisaged that teaching learning of EVS, as a subject will enable children to realize how their dicission and actions affect the environment. It will also help in building knowledge and certain skills necessary to address the challenges they face around them. This will enable children to become advocates and stewards of the environment. Ultimately this will contribute towards building a sustainable future.

Given this shift in global and national concerns it requires gearing the efforts on the process of curriculum development, planning and transaction in a manner that views a subject like EVS, which is interdisciplinary, as an approach as well. Over the years EVS evolved not just as a discipline cutting across the traditional subject boundaries to help children understand their surroundings but also as a discipline which encompasses natural, physical, social and cultural aspects, which children do not compartmentalize while interacting with it.
EVS learning aims to help children acquire knowledge, skills and dispositions so that they become sensitive and responsible individuals. Also, it helps the children to not only be aware but also raise the issues related to equality, justice and respect for humans.
For eg., The Chapter-3, Class IV,
" From Testing to Digesting ", integrates all these- tasting, digesting, cooking, preserving techniques, farmers and hunger. This chapter does not contain information about the digestive system, but children's experiences have been used to build an underground understanding that the process of digestion begins in the mouth itself. Later in the chapter, through a description of the food habits of two contrasting children, the chapter tries to raise questions about what is ' good food ' and why do people who grow crops don't get enough to eat.
