1. In Ariel's 'Share The Load' ad, a father watches his daughter juggle work and household chores. After instrospecting his own role at house, he tries to bring a positive change in the family.
ReplyDeleteHe agrees to share laundry duties with his wife - this ad is a perfect challenge to gender stereotypes in our society.
2. This very simple yet powerful ad hits the nail on the head.
It is beautifully written and it manages to break all stereotypes, giving a reality check to the hypocrisy that exists in our society.
Debunking the old rules to make her own way, Radhika Apte shows us how bold is beautiful and it should be a philosophy we should live by.
Do you remember Havell's 'Hawa Badlegi' advertisement?
ReplyDeleteA couple sitting at a registrar's office, with the husband taking the wife's last name and making the official do double take.
A brilliant yet simple take to break the gender stereotype.

The Product is an egg like plastic container. half of it have edible substance made out of milk and half of it have small mini toys which are the main characteristic features of this product. The toy in the Kinderjoy(Boy) have boys character which boys likes most like car, pistol cycles etc whereas toy in Kinderjoy(Girl) have girl Characters which girls like most. for example dolls, kitchenware etc.
In other instances, Potato Chips packet liked both by Boys and Girls but its selection we find no differences as potato chips packets are gender friendly products that neutralizes gender stereotypic behavior. Being ourselves in the teaching profession we should also act like potato chips packet that help us to neutralizes gender stereotypic behaviour in our classroom that make teaching learning an effective one.

A very nice advertisement which tells us that boys should also do household chores. It is the duty of every parents to teach their children to do household chores irrespective of gender.
In this 21st century Media play a vital role to promote gender equality, so in my view media should stop advertising of gender stereotypes culture.

When I think about the gender stereotype I remember the advertisement of moov pain relief, were they show that whatsover pain it may be but boys should not cry because it is believe that boys are stronger then the girl. I also remember the advertisement of garnier man cream were boys also wanna fair and soft like a girl...This shows the gender friendly advertised.
ReplyDeleteOne of the stereotypes advertisement comes to my mind is the advertisement of fair and lovely, were they try to convince a girls to use this products and fulfill your dream and become a independent like a boys .another advertisement is like a adds of scooty were they try to show girls have a so much fun like a boys do. This shows the gender friendly advertisement.

It depends on when to do copy paste, the time one does so, one will be either termed as gender stereotype or against it. So, cautiousness is better, the timing matters. Obviously, neutral way is best for a long run.

1. I think one of the big NO'S of commercial advertisements in India related to gender sterotyping are the MOTORBIKE ads. In almost every ads, its a Male who is driving the two wheeler. In fact, in the Indian society, driving a two wheeler seems to be a thing of men. BAJAJ Pulsar, which is one of the leading motorbike sellers in the indian market, has a tag line... "PULSAR Definitely Male"!
ReplyDelete2. The advertisement which I am going to mention is very accurate in respect to our indian society. The advertisement is of "PREGA NEWS". In the ad it is shown, a woman is expecting her baby and is in her final few days before delivery. Some people come to her door which is attendend by her mother-in-law. They ask for money in return for good blessings ,especially a blessing for a son. The mother-in-law in law replies, if you people wanted to bless, then give blessings for the good health of the child and mother. It doesn't matter if its a boy or girl. A child itself is a blessing for the family.
Gender stereotypes are advocated by advertisement like ashirvad aata which only show women working in kitchen which surely decays our mentality.
ReplyDeleteWhile in ads of complan and health drinks boys and girls are shown together a perfect example of gender equality.

This ad shows a man watching TV serials, who is then told by the narrator, "Stop before you stop being a man. Quit using your wife's shampoo, get the new Head & Shoulders for men, and rediscover the man you once were."
After the man uses the new shampoo, he is now interested in watching football on the TV.
Thus it says that watching TV serials is feminine while watching sports is masculine.

This ad shows a couple going to the marriage registrar's office. The (female) registrar assumes that after marriage, the wife will take the man's surname, in line with the usual Inidan practice. But the man tells the registrar that he is going to take his wife's last name instead while his wife will keep her original surname after marriage, which surprises the registrar.
The ad's title is "Hawa Badlegi [The wind will change(direction)]" which expresses hope for social change.

ReplyDeleteGender friendly:Hero MotoCorp TVC for brands scooter featuring Alia Bhatt reiterating the brands message"Why should boys have all the fun".The ad film targetting young women to have all the fun and enjoy as much as men.
1:-Tata Tea advertisement reflects reinforcement of gender stereotype,in which when a daughter seeks permission to play outside with her brother but her mother denies and tell her to help in kitchen chores ,whereas her brother was easily permitted to play outside.

Such advertisements give a message about gender specific roles which is not true. The home is built by both man and women and both need to contribute equally And maintain a healthy balance .
An advertisement of Scooty adding"Why should boys have all the fun???"shows gender stereotypes.
ReplyDeleteGender stereotyping, according to Science Direct, are the beliefs that people have about the characteristics of male and female.
ReplyDeleteThis belief system starts developing in a child's mind from the environment she/he is brought up and the division of work or chores given to separate genders. She/he starts believing that such roles and work are what they are born into.
However, times are changing and various attempts are being made to stop these stereotypes and to break the glass ceiling across the globe, including India which has been a patriarchal society and a witness to unfair treatment of women for decades.
Such wonderful endeavour to shun stereotyping is being taken by the film and advertising industry in India.
Advertisement that reinforces gender stereotypes:-
Har Ghar Amul Ghar-Pyara Bandhan advertisement:- This advertisement depicts what ‘Har Ghar’ has portrayed gender differences to their children at an early stage, i.e., through toys. Girls are to play with dolls, teddy bears, kitchen sets, etc., while boys play with cars, spiderman, guns, etc.

Advertisement that are gender friendly and trying to bring a wind of change:-
BIBA- Change the Convention #ChangeIsBeautiful advertisement:- This wonderful advertisement speaks volume about how every girl should be cherished. Many girls in India have to go through the checking process before marriage, i.e. if she knows how to cook or do household chores and if she is fit for the man like a commodity. This advertisement shows this humiliating process but with a twist as the girl's father questions the man if he could cook. This brings a reversal of role and change in convention that encourages equality.

The study of women 's magazines since the 1950s found that advertisement focus an idealised image of the knowing mother ' who is exhorted to put all their expertise to use in the service of the family.
Researchers at the University of Sydney between 1950 and 2010.
Their findings published in Journal of consumer culture indicate that while the image of mother changed over the period from consumers needing expert guidance to women able to draw on their own knowledge is always use first to care for their family.

Johnson’s Baby is a brand that makes baby products. But in most of the ads, only the mother is shown taking care of the child. For example, when it is a soap product, the mother bathes the child, or when it is an oil product, the mother massages the baby. ReplyDeleteIsn’t it a stereotype? Do women always hold the responsibility of taking care of a child? Why is it that the men are never home in these advertisements? A father is as much responsible as a mother. Showing only a mother is taking care of her baby is a stereotype.

ReplyDeleteDo you remember Havell's 'Hawa Badlegi' advertisement?
A couple sitting at a registrar's office, with the husband taking the wife's last name and making the official do a double take.

Gender refers to the social roles and behavior that may assign to man or women. Gender stereotypes and norms are adopted by children from our society. I remember the advertisement of fair n handsome cream were boys also want fair and soft like girls. This shows the gender friendly advertisement.
ReplyDeleteMost of the advertisements related to cars or automobiles feature only men as drivers. Implying a car is something which is only meant for men, and that they are the target audience is again a stereotype. A woman is hardly seen driving in an advertisement. Why? Can’t women drive? ReplyDeleteFlipkart, a brand that has been using children as adults in campaigns, has now rolled out a film that aims to showcase gender equality among the former. Conceptualised by Dentsu Webchutney, the film featuring '#GenerationEqual', takes on dated ideas of gender roles. It says its okay for both girls and boys to like the colour pink, and cars as gifts among other scenarios. Apuarv Sethi, director – brand marketing, Flipkart, said, “As parents in 2018, we’d like to be progressive in letting our child choose for themselves in several aspects, so that they get to do what they love. Let the child experience the hobbies, passions, interests, and personality traits that come naturally to them… whether it’s a boy who wants to learn cooking, or a girl passionate about collecting superhero toys. And the other way around too." Prashant Gopalakrishnan, SVP - client services, Dentsu Webchutney, said, “Look around you. Do you have a son, daughter, niece, nephew, or a friend’s child born a few years after the millennium? They are all part of #GenerationEqual. Real change will happen when we collectively decide to make the same rules that influence their lives. And as far as we can, let’s keep those rules the same for both boys and girls. That is the most real way to ensure our biases don’t pass on to them.”

The given advertisement first, showcases the traditional ' boy's family visiting the girl ' for an arranged marriage, however after giving a green signal to the marriage the girl's father asks the boy if he can cook . This is a question asked largely to women. Then the boy asks the girl's family to visit his house which is quite non traditional. This is very different, gender friendly and questions the existing gender stereotypes in India.

As a human being and teacher I strongly oppose those ideas and practices mentioned , because for me both the genders are equal and should be treated equally without bias to create a better society to live in . This way one doesn't feel inferior than the other.

History has witnessed a perfect example of gender distinction (gender stereotype).Razia sultan was dethroned (remove) from the thrown as The noble were not happy with her ruling as she was a woman. The TV advertisement of Nirma washing powder nirma, here the woman washing clothes indicated n make it clear that the laundry duties is always with womenfolk.Another example of gender stereotype is even the producer and the manufacturer of kinder Joy had made kinder Joy separately for boys and girls which shows clear example of gender distinction. The advertisement like (New Active wheel housewife),here both The husband and wife went to market together by a scooter.Husband bother about the wife's using of low quality powder n bother about wife health n load on laundry duties clearly reflect gender friendly environment, loves, and sharing.

An example of advertisement that reinforces gender stereotype is that of Johnson's baby brand that makes baby products. Here only mother is shown as taking care of the baby. ReplyDeleteMagazine adverts continue to tell mothers to put families first and devote their knowledge to caring for family members rather than using it for personal and professional advancement, according to an international study. When Mattel’s highly anticipated limited-edition Moschino Barbie hit the shelves last November, the collection sold out in less than an hour. But far more groundbreaking than the sales was the video that promoted the collaboration between Barbie and the Italian fashion house. For the first time in 56 years, the face of the Mattel brand was a little boy with a blond faux-hawk. “Moschino Barbie is so fierce!” he says as he holds Moschino Barbie’s purse, giving the camera a cheeky little wink. The video has since amassed over 3 million views and nearly 4,000 comments on YouTube. Barbie is far from the only brand breaking gender stereotypes, embracing ambiguity in its advertising. Spanish retail giant Zara unveiled a gender-neutral line earlier this month. Disney removed gender labels from its Halloween costumes last October, and both Target and Toys “R” Us have also done away with gender-based labeling in their stores on toys and decor. In luxury fashion, brands from Rad Hourani to Gucci and Marc Jacobs to Hermès are blurring the divide between feminine and masculine style.

Isn't it a stereotype? Do women always hold the responsibility of taking care of a child? Why is it that the men are never shown in these advertisements? A father is as much as responsible as a mother. Showing only a mother is taking care of her baby is stereotype.

There's only small hole for BEAK to pass, all sides covered by Male Hornbill using some trees sticky latex. Female Hornbill & babies would live inside Hole or hollow wood till their babies able to fly. When time for babies to fly comes then Male Hornbill stop supplies of food to them and break the sticky cover that covers the entry/exit Hole on the tree.

ReplyDeleteIn the Indian context, gender discrimination due to gender stereotyping is rampant even in today's world. One example of this is the taboo or distaste towards darker complexions in society. Since, India is predominantly a patriarchal society, the burden of this stereotype has been felt by women. The example of a "Fair & Lovely" advertisement given above is a problem that has plagued our society for decades. The advertisement can be dissected into different problematic aspects that include gender bias and male dominance in the society.
